Lt. Amiel Weeks Whipple was in charge of surveying the 35th parallel route for a transcontinental railroad.  Penstemon whippleanus was collected by John Bigelow in the Sandias near present-day Albuquerque in  1853 on the Whipple Expedition and named by Asa Gray in 1862.
