Spiranthes romanzoffiana  (Hooded Lady's Tresses)
Orchidaceae (Orchid Family)

Montane. Wetlands.

The genus was named by John Richardson in 1818, and the species was named in 1828 by Louis Charles de Chamisso for the early 19th century Russian Chancellor and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikolai Romanzoff, who sponsored Otto von Kotzebue's 1815-1818 voyage to the California Coast, Bering Sea, and explorations for a north-east passage.  Chamisso was the ship's naturalist.

"Spiranthes" is from two Greek words meaning “spiral and flowers”, referring to the spiraled flower arrangement of this genus.
