Sereno Watson named this Habenaria sparsiflora in 1835, Friedrich Schlechter named it Platanthera sparsiflora in 1899, and Per Axel Rydberg named it Limnorchis ensifolia in 1901.
"Platanthera", Greek for “wide anthers”, refers to the flower's broad anthers. Sparsiflora, from the Latin word meaning “scattered flowers”, or “sparsely flowered” Flowered spikes.
