Linnaeus first named this plant Orchis hyperborea in 1767. Weber accepts Per Axel Rydberg's 1900 name of Limnorchis hyperborea. Charles Sheviak renamed this plant Platanthera aquilonis in 1999.
"Platanthera", Greek for “wide anthers”, refers to the flower's broad anthers. "Aquilnois" meaning “of the north” refers to its range.
