Corallorhiza trifida (Northern Coral Root Orchid)
Orchidaceae (Orchid Family)
Montane. Aspen, Spruce, and Fir.
In 1753 Linnaeus named this Ophrys corallorhiza; in 1760 Jean Jacques Chatelain renamed this species, Corallorhiza trifida, coining the new genus name.
The word "corallorhiza", from the Greek word "korallion" meaning “coral” and "rhiza" meaning “root”, refers to the coral-like appearance of the underground rhizomes. "Trifida" from the Latin “trifidus”, "cleft into three parts" refers to the three-lobed lip.
