Jean Jacques Chatelain named this genus in 1760.  John Lindley named this species in 1840. 

The word "corallorhiza", from the Greek word "korallion" meaning “coral” and "rhiza" meaning “root”, refers to the coral-like appearance of the underground rhizomes.  "Striata", from the Latin word "striatus", means “striped” and refers to the striping on the flower.
