Jean Jacques Chatelain named this genus in 1760. Rafinesque named this species in 1817.

The word "corallorhiza", from the Greek word "korallion" meaning “coral” and "rhiza" meaning “root”, refers to the coral-like appearance of the underground rhizomes.  "Maculata", from the Latin word "maculates" means "spotted' and refers to the spotting on the flower.
