In 1753 Linnaeus named this plant Satyrium viride ; Carl Hartman renamed it Coeloglossum viride in 1820.

"Coeloglossum" from the Greek words "koilos" ( “hollow”) and "glossa" (“tongue”) refer to the nectary spur characteristics.  "Viride" means "green".
