Botrychium virginianum
(Synonym: Sceptridium virginianus)

Linnaeus named this plant Osmunda virginianum in 1753 and Olof Swartz renamed it Botrychium virginianum in 1800. This is the largest of all of our Moonworts, growing six to twelve inches tall.

"Virginianum" honors the state of Virginia, where it was first found and described. That state name in turn honors Queen Elizabeth, the Virgin Queen.
