Welcome to the Colorado Native Plant Society web site where you will find details about the objectives, functions, and activities of the Society. Our membership consists of gardeners, hikers, botanical professionals, and all plant lovers who want to enjoy and preserve the native plants of Colorado. We hope you will join us.

Check each chapter's page for programs and field trips, all of which are free and open to everyone. Browse the entire web site for native plant information, links to other botanical web sites, annual meeting information, and our bookstore and newsletter. Be sure to look at the "What's New" page and the daily botanical news updates on "Botanical News".

Guidelines for Submitting Material for the CoNPS Web Site

1) Standardize all entries for programs and field trips using the following guidelines:

A) Use this order:

First line: Date and time (April 26, 2009, 1 p.m.)

Second line: Title of event (e.g., "Spring Wildflower Hike"; “Mushroom Talk and Slideshow”)

Third line: Leader/Presenter (and affiliation) (e.g., Julie Smith, Bureau of Land Management Botanist)

Fourth line: Event location (e.g. “Bonny Prairie in Yuma County”; “Denver University, Olin Hall”)

After the above four entries, the next paragraphs should give ample details about the presentation/field trip and some information about the presenter/field trip leader. The more information you give, the more you generate interest in your programs and field trips. Following are two examples:

Mushroom Talk and Slide Show

November 19, 2009, 6:30-8:00+ p.m.
Presenter: Page Lindsey, Retired Fort Lewis College Professor of Biology
Location: San Juan Public Lands Center, Durango

Page Lindsey, recently retired Professor of Biology at Fort Lewis College, will discuss mushrooms of the San Juans. She will tell us about the mushrooms commonly found in our area; how, when, and where to collect them; and how to tell if they are edible or poisonous. There will be some coverage of the role mushrooms and other fungi play in the ecosystem,e.g., wood decay fungi and mycorrhizae. Some fungi are beneficial ecologically, although they may be detrimental to human affairs.

There will be a number of field guides on display and Page will comment on the attributes of each.

There will be plenty of time for audience questions. Social and treats to follow.

Early Canyon Wildflowers of Dominguez Canyon

April 26, 2009
Leader: Gretchen VanReyper, Colorado Native Plant Society
Location: Dominguez Canyon

We will assist the Colorado Natural Heritage Program in its survey for rare plants in the Dominguez Canyon Wilderness Study Area. The terrain may be rough with some strenuous hiking.

Participants should be prepared for some rough terrain (off-trail hiking) and whatever the weather may bring. Also bring food, water, and whatever else you might need (field guides, hand-lens recommended if you have them).

Email Gretchen VanReyper or call her at 970-835-3268 for trip reservations and details.

The more information you give, the more you generate interest in your programs and field trips.

2) Entries may be typed in any application: Word, WordPerfect, an email, etc.

3) Send PDFs for material that remains constant, such as, guidelines, registration forms, calendars, etc. Discuss PDFs with the Webmaster before submitting them. If the material you are updating is on the web site as a PDF, send an entirely new PDF.

4) Writing

  • Please capitalize, underline, paragraph, etc., as shown on your page, for example, a.m., not AM.
  • Write out names instead of using abbreviations, for example, “Bureau of Land Management” instead of “BLM”.
  • Don’t worry about the font, font size, and font color. Our web page software converts your typing to the style shown on your web page.

5) Use common names for plants if you wish to, but be sure to use scientific names, which should be in italics and capitalized properly ( Senecio eremophilus ) . Use Weber’s nomenclature.

6) If material being submitted is almost identical to that already on your web page, send only the changes, i.e., if you have the same event year after year just indicate: “In the first line, change June 1-3, 2009 to June 5-7, 2010 and in the fifth line change Sara Barns to Julie Daniels. Leave all else the same.” But, as noted above, send entirely new PDFs.

7) Photographs of your activities (before and after) add interest to your web page.

8) Please feel free to contact the Webmaster for ideas and assistance.
